Cary Joji Fukunaga has been selected as the next director of the upcoming twenty-fifth James Bond film.
Problems and controversies regarding the latest entry of the Bond franchise have surrounded the movie since before the previous 007 film, “Spectre” was even released.
Initially, star Daniel Craig said he was tired of playing Bond and wanted to turn the role over to someone else. Many became passionate about casting Idris Elba as the first black actor to play the spy, but that didn’t work out — at least not yet. Following months of contract negotiations, it was decided Craig would return for one final go-around as the famous British spy. According to BusinessInsider, the actor is being paid a reported $25 million to reprise his role.

After Sam Mendes, who directed the two most recent 007 films “Spectre” and “Skyfall,” dropped out of the upcoming movie, tentatively titled “Bond 25”, “Slumdog Millionaire” and “28 Days Later” director Danny Boyle took over the project. However, last month, it was reported that Boyle left the project as well over alleged creative differences.
“Bond 25” has found its new director in Cary Joji Fukunaga. Fukunaga, who recently helmed the much-acclaimed Netflix limited series “Maniac” released his first statement regarding his participation in “Bond 25” to Indiewire, saying he’s “wanted to do one of these for a long time.”
Fukunaga was catapulted to fame after directing all eight episodes of the first season of HBO’s “True Detective.” The gritty crime drama, which had a nearly 10 minute action sequence shot in one continuous take, marked his as one of Hollywood’s top directors. He was initially in charge of the feature adaptation of Stephen King’s “It” but after creative differences, he left the project and was replaced by Andy Muschietti.
