[ENTERTAINMENT] SO MANY SHOWS, SO LITTLE TIME

October seemed especially packed with new television shows to watch, from Netflix, Hulu, the Paramount Network and regular cable as well. I’m going to attempt to break down some of the best shows released within the past month so you can decide what you want to spend your time watching.

“The Haunting of Hill House”

Netflix’s new miniseries, based on the 1959 gothic horror novel, is basically “This is Us” taking place in a haunted house, but not in a ridiculous or corny way. Interspliced between the past and present, the show follows a family of five kids living with their parents (the dad is the boy from “ET” and the mom is the mom from “Spy Kids”) in a haunted house. The other half of the show takes place when the kids are all grown up, out of the house and still reliving the trauma from their childhood.

One of the more interesting elements of the show is the ghosts hidden in the background. In almost every scene taking place inside the haunted house, there’s at least one ghost just chilling in the shadows. It adds an extra level of creepiness to it and rewards those who pay close attention.

If you’re like me and want to like “This is Us” but find it too melodramatic and corny, “The Haunting of Hill House” might be for you.

“Heathers”

Based on the 80’s cult classic, Paramount Network’s TV reboot of “Heathers” has had a rocky start, to say the least. Originally planned to be released this past spring, it was indefinitely delayed following the Parkland school shooting on Valentine’s Day, since the show deals with school shootings, suicides and bomb threats. It was released this past week, but after the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting the network took it off the air, but it’s still available to stream.

This show is honestly one of the gayest things I’ve ever seen. It attacks PC culture, as well as modern high school life, painting everyone and everything in a satirical lens. Rather than having the Heathers be pretty white girls like in the 80’s movie, this version of the Heathers features a plus-sized leader, a gay Heather and a black girl to lead out the trio.

The show makes fun of everyone and everything, but its ridiculous and catty dialogue make it endlessly quotable, but also overtly insane. Most people will probably hate it, and I’m honestly not sure if I’ll be able to make it all the way through the nine episode season, but we’ll see.

“The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”

Do you remember Melissa Joan Hart’s 90’s show “Sabrina: The Teenage Witch?” Well forget everything you thought you knew about the sitcom because Netflix has revamped it in “Riverdale” fashion. Taking a dark and brooding look at the teenaged witch, the show is less comedy and more horror, dealing with Satanists and chilling murders.

Halloween may be over, but you can still stream the entirety of “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” on Netflix.
