Last night the 91st Academy Awards came and went; a seemingly successful night that feature some controversy and surprise.
The big award of the night went to “Green Book,” which took home three awards including best original screenplay and best supporting actor. “Green Book” was a highly controversial pick for best picture, sparking outrage from Spike Lee and Don Shirley’s family over the portrayal of Mahershala Ali’s character. Alfonso Cuarón’s deeply personal and deeply beautiful film “Roma” was won three Oscars for directing, cinematography and foreign language film. With Cuarón’s win, it marks five out of the last six years a Mexican-born director has taken home best director.

Among some other notable winners, Rami Malek won best actor for his portrayal of rock icon Freddie Mercury, one of four Oscars won by “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and Olivia Coleman secured the biggest upset of the night, winning best actress for her role in “The Favourite.” It was her acceptance speech that stole the show and was one of the peaks of the night.

The signature moment of the show was when Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga shared the stage to perform their monster hit “Shallow.” This was the first time the two performed the song on television and they took over the internet. The song went on to win the award for best original song later on in the night.

The Oscars went hostless for the first time in thirty years and resulted in a smooth, relatively short show. The collapse in ratings over recent years has led to a mini crisis amongst the Academy and the decision to go without a host seemed bold at first, but really helped move the telecast along last night. Instead of a host, the show featured a collection of presenters to give out the various awards. Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph and Tina Fey kick off the show and steered the ship in the right direction with a mini-monologue. The tandem of Melissa McCarthy and Brian Tyree Henry highlighted the presenters when they gave out the award for best costume design wearing some of the most ridiculous outfits of all time. Despite some outrage around “Green Book,” the show seemed to go without a hitch this year.
