Netflix is changing the game with talks of launching a new feature that lets you decide different aspects of a television show.
The streaming company has plans to preview an interactive episode in the popular Emmy winning series, ‘Black Mirror’. The show is set to premier its fifth season this December, hopefully including an episode that allows viewers to chose the adventure of the episode. According to Bloomberg, the company is looking for new ways to lure customers in and interactive television seems to be the new theory. The streaming service already offers a number of choose-your-own-adventure television shows which are animated and tailored to children.
The ‘Black Mirror’ series differs from the children show because this will be the first experiment of interactive television with a live action series for Netflix. This is not yet expressed but will most likely affect production immensely, from the number of scripts to the time of the script writers, actors, and producers. The stories that will be narrated by viewers will be very complex and detail oriented, which is sure to take up a lot of time from the production standpoint.
HBO has also participated in the interactive television wave with its show ‘Mosaic’, but as Bloomberg states “no narrative TV show that asked viewers to engage with the plot has become a huge hit”. According to Jim Spare, chief operating officer of a company that creates interactive television shows, this could soon be changing.
If you are a ‘Black Mirror’ fan like myself I am sure this is something that you cannot wait for. This new video game like way of watching television is something I am sure will attract the minds of many.
