[Music] ‘Acid Rap’ Turns Six Years Old Today

Six years ago, a Chicago kid named Chancellor Bennett released his second mixtape, Acid Rap, and the rest is history. Chance The Rapper created one of the most iconic and critically acclaimed records of the 21st century and today we celebrate its existence.

Chance, then a relative unknown, followed up his first mixtape 10 Day with a drug induced sound, utilizing his raspy voice and creative production team to make an incredible, innovative record. The thing that makes Acid Rap such a triumph, is that it is so uniquely original it became immensely clear that Chance was destined to be a star.

The tape features a bevy of collaborators, most of whom were relatively unknown, or at least not nearly as popular as they are now. Childish Gambino, Noname, Saba, Vic Mensa and Action Bronson all stopped by to record a feature on the mixtape. When a project is filled with features there is typically a good chance that some of them are lost in the midst of everything else happening on the record, but on Acid Rap each guest on their respective track really makes their time memorable.

Chance follow Acid Rap with his most recent mixtape, Coloring Book. Released in 2015, Coloring Book was a diversion from the acid induced sound, and instead exchanged for a fusion of gospel, jazz and rap music. While the projects sound quite different, it’s a testament of the talent and artistry Chance possesses, and his ability to create new and exciting projects. He announced earlier this year, that his debut studio album will be released some time during July of 2019.

Bump some Acid Rap today, and let us hope that Chance continues to pump out classics. What is your favorite track? Leave a comment below and let us know.
