Warriors Get Scare From Shorthanded Thunder After Being Honored
The Golden State Warriors did something on Tuesday night that’s become a tradition around the Bay Area over the past few seasons.
The Golden State Warriors players, coaches, and owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber were received their championship rings and lifted their 2017-18 championship banner ahead of their season opener.
The rings come with a special look to them this season as they are the first reversible championship rings ever. Seventy-four sapphires on the “blue” side with seventy-four diamonds on the “white” side.
Having won consecutive titles, the Warriors are looking to make it three-in-a-row this season, but first things first was a game at Oracle Arena with a Russell Westbrook-less Thunder team.
The Golden State Warriors overcame a strong second half rally to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 108-100.
Stephen Curry led the way for the Dubs with 32 points, 9 assists and 8 rebounds on the night as Golden State overcame their own sloppy play (20 turnovers) and porous night from beyond the arc (7-for-26).
That’s something coach Steve Kerr will stress in the Warriors next practice, but with it being the first game of the season, understands his team getting caught up in the emotions of a ring night.
The Golden State Warriors opened their final season in Oakland on Tuesday night as they will move to their new arena, Chase Center, in San Francisco next season.
The Warriors have been in the Oakland since 1966 when Oracle Arena first opened.
It’s a franchise that with the celebration of this third championship title in four years has reached new heights.
Klay Thompson said days before the season opener on Tuesday night that the Golden State Warriors motivation for a fourth championship in five years.
“We want to do it for the fans of Oakland,” Thompson said. “Been so loyal to us for 40-plus years, whatever it’s been since they’ve been in Oracle. So that definitely helps with this season. It’s leaving a big legacy behind in Oakland because people might not get to see us as much in San Francisco. And just enjoying this every night.”
The Golden State Warriors will visit Salt Lake City to take on the Utah Jazz on Friday night.
